despite，in spite of

Despite用作介詞時(shí)，與 in spite of同義，都表示“盡管”、“雖然”、“不顧”之意，但程度有所不同。

一般說(shuō)來(lái)，in spite of的語(yǔ)氣較強(qiáng)，使用范圍也較廣; despite的語(yǔ)氣較弱，多用于詩(shī)歌或正式的文體中。Despite可以寫(xiě)作despite of，也可以寫(xiě)作 in despite of;in spite of則可以寫(xiě)作 spite of，但這些寫(xiě)法已少用了。例：

Despite his advanced years，he is learning to drive.

雖然年事已高，他現(xiàn)在在學(xué)駕駛汽車(chē)。

Despite the drought，we expect a good crop.

盡管天旱，豐收依然在望。

In spite of the police brandishing their clubs and pistols，people showed not the slightest fear.

盡管警方揮動(dòng)著短棍及手槍，但人們毫不畏懼。

We arrived at the station in spite of the storm.

雖然有暴風(fēng)雨，我們依舊準(zhǔn)點(diǎn)到達(dá)火車(chē)站。

應(yīng)當(dāng)在此指出的是，在現(xiàn)代英語(yǔ)里，despite和in spite of的差距已日漸縮小，很多人已將它們互換使用。

Despite除作介詞外，尚可用作名詞，表示“蔑視”、“憎恨”、“無(wú)意對(duì)待”之意。例：

The old woman died of despite.

那位老大娘飲恨而死。

He tripped me out of despite，not by accident.

他絆倒我是出于惡意，不是出于意外。

在上列兩句中，despite用作名詞，它亦可改寫(xiě)為spite.
