用法一 apply表示“應(yīng)用”、“運(yùn)用”、“適用”等，注意以下用法：

①表示“應(yīng)用”、“運(yùn)用”等，通常為及物動(dòng)詞;要表示“將...運(yùn)用到...”，通常用介詞 to：

We decided to apply a new method. 我們決定使用新方法。

In this way we can better apply theory to practice. 這樣我們就能更好地把理論運(yùn)用到實(shí)踐中去。

②表示“適用”，通常為不及物動(dòng)詞;要表示“適用于...”，通常用介詞 to(不能用 for)：

The rule doesn’t apply in all cases. 此規(guī)則并非適用于所有的情形。

The book does not apply to beginners. 這書(shū)不適合于初學(xué)者。

These methods apply to learning English. 這些方法適用于英語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)。

用法二 apply表示“申請(qǐng)”，注意以下用法：

①可用及物或不及物動(dòng)詞，表示“申請(qǐng)得到...”，要用介詞 for;表示“申請(qǐng)做某事”，其后接不定式：

You may apply in person or by letter. 你親自或通過(guò)書(shū)信申請(qǐng)均可。

More than 30 people applied for the position. 有30多個(gè)人申請(qǐng)這個(gè)職位。

He applied to stay there. 他申請(qǐng)留在那兒。

比較以下兩同義句：

去年他申請(qǐng)入黨。

正：Last year he applied to join the Party.

正：Last year he applied for membership in the Party.

②表示“向...申請(qǐng)(得到)...”，通常用 apply to...for...：

He applied to us for help. 他向我們求援。

They applied to the government for financial help. 他們向政府申請(qǐng)經(jīng)濟(jì)援助。

用法三 apply用于短語(yǔ) apply oneself to (專心致力于，專心從事)，其中的 to 是介詞，其后接名詞或動(dòng)名詞：

He applied himself to his work. 他專心工作。

She applied herself to learning English. 她專心學(xué)習(xí)英語(yǔ)。

有時(shí)用apply one’s mind to：

Apply your mind to your work. 專心工作吧。

用法四 apply的派生詞

①applicable adj. 適用于：

This rule is not applicable to foreigners. 這條規(guī)則不適用于外國(guó)人。

②applicant n. 申請(qǐng)者(可數(shù))：

There are three applicants for the job. 有三個(gè)人申請(qǐng)這項(xiàng)工作。

③application n. 申請(qǐng)(不可數(shù));申請(qǐng)書(shū)(可數(shù));使用，應(yīng)用 ，適用(可數(shù)或不可數(shù))：

Application must be made this afternoon. 申請(qǐng)必須在今天下午提出。

It’s of very wide application. 它的適用范圍很廣。

We received 60 applications for the job. 對(duì)這項(xiàng)工作我們收到60個(gè)人的求職申請(qǐng)。
