last，latest

這兩個(gè)詞都是late的最高級(jí)。用作形容詞時(shí)，last 在意義上和latest有點(diǎn)相近，實(shí)際上，它們的涵義和使用場(chǎng)合是不一樣的。

Last指連續(xù)順序中的最后一個(gè)，一般譯作“最后的”，有時(shí)譯為“上一次的”或“過去的”。last的對(duì)語是first.例：

The last time I saw them was in Paris last year.

我最后一次看見他們是去年在巴黎。

The last letter of the alphabet is Z.

字母表的最后一個(gè)字母是Z.

I don’t know whether you have received my last letter or not.

我不知道你是否已收到我上一封信。

Latest表示時(shí)間上的“最近”，一般譯作“最近的”、“最新的”或“最晚的”。latest的對(duì)語是earliest.例：

The latest news about the Mideast is the beginning of another round of peace-talks.

關(guān)于中東的最新消息是另一回和談已展開。

What is the latest fashion in town?

城中的最新時(shí)尚是什么?

This is his latest novel;we hope it is not his last.

這是他最新的著作，我們希望這不是他的最后一部。

請(qǐng)注意，last year、last month、last week、last night都是時(shí)間狀語，它們的前面無需使用介詞，但last century卻是例外，我們必須說in the last century或 during the last century.介詞in和during不能省略。
