Beijing’s central heating is likely to be switched on early this winter, when the average temperature plunges below 5 C for five days consecutively or when a heavy snowfall or high wind hits the city。

如果平均氣溫連續5天低于5攝氏度，或遭遇暴雪、強風天氣，北京市就將提前啟動集中供暖。

文中的central heating就是指“集中供暖”，“供暖”也稱為heating supply，提供central heating的這段時間也就是heating season(供熱時期、供暖季)。為保證這段期間的燃料供應，北京還在周邊地區建立了contingency reserve base of coal(煤炭應急儲備基地)。這也打消了大家對于extremely cold winter(極寒)的顧慮。

為了滿足不同用戶的需求，北京一些小區還推行了household heating(分戶供暖)，對用戶實際的使用情況進行計量收費，所采取的標準就是household-based heat metering(分戶熱計量)。
