1. 主要表示意外事故。如：

The accident happened at about 5.30. 事故大約發(fā)生在5點(diǎn)半鐘。

Poor Jim has just had an accident. 可憐的吉姆剛出了個(gè)事故。

The accident was due to carelessness. 這起車禍?zhǔn)怯纱中脑斐傻摹?/p>

有時(shí)也表示偶然發(fā)生的意外事件，不一定是“事故”。如：

I’m sorry I broke the glass. It was an accident. 我很抱歉打破了玻璃杯，這完全是無(wú)意的。

2. 用于It is no accident that…，其意為“……絕非偶然”。如：

It is no accident that men fill most of the top jobs. 大多數(shù)高級(jí)職位由男性擔(dān)任絕非偶然。

3. 用于習(xí)語(yǔ)by accident，其意為“偶然地”“無(wú)意地”，主要用作狀語(yǔ)，有時(shí)也用作表語(yǔ)。如：

I deleted the file by accident. 我無(wú)意中把文章刪掉了。

If he knew this, it would have had to be by accident. 假如他已知道此事，那一定是出于偶然的。

漢語(yǔ)常將“無(wú)意地”與“故意地”用在一起，后者的英語(yǔ)表達(dá)是by design或on purpose(注意各自所搭配的介詞)。如：

I’m sure he ignored you by accident and not by design. 我想他沒(méi)理你是無(wú)意不是有意的。

I don’t know if it was done by accident or on purpose. 我不知道那是偶然的還是故意的。
