1. 主要表示意外事故。如:
The accident happened at about 5.30. 事故大約發(fā)生在5點(diǎn)半鐘。
Poor Jim has just had an accident. 可憐的吉姆剛出了個(gè)事故。
The accident was due to carelessness. 這起車禍?zhǔn)怯纱中脑斐傻摹?/p>
有時(shí)也表示偶然發(fā)生的意外事件,不一定是“事故”。如:
I’m sorry I broke the glass. It was an accident. 我很抱歉打破了玻璃杯,這完全是無(wú)意的。
2. 用于It is no accident that…,其意為“……絕非偶然”。如:
It is no accident that men fill most of the top jobs. 大多數(shù)高級(jí)職位由男性擔(dān)任絕非偶然。
3. 用于習(xí)語(yǔ)by accident,其意為“偶然地”“無(wú)意地”,主要用作狀語(yǔ),有時(shí)也用作表語(yǔ)。如:
I deleted the file by accident. 我無(wú)意中把文章刪掉了。
If he knew this, it would have had to be by accident. 假如他已知道此事,那一定是出于偶然的。
漢語(yǔ)常將“無(wú)意地”與“故意地”用在一起,后者的英語(yǔ)表達(dá)是by design或on purpose(注意各自所搭配的介詞)。如:
I’m sure he ignored you by accident and not by design. 我想他沒(méi)理你是無(wú)意不是有意的。
I don’t know if it was done by accident or on purpose. 我不知道那是偶然的還是故意的。
