in possession of，in the possession of

這一對(duì)片語都表示“占有”之意，但前者表示主動(dòng)意義，后者表示被動(dòng)涵義。為此，前者一般譯作“占有”，后者譯為“被…占有”或“為…所有”。例：

Who is in possession of this estate?

這是誰的地產(chǎn)?

Our university is now in possession of those buildings.

現(xiàn)在那些樓房是屬于我們大學(xué)的。

試比較下例：

Those buildings are now in the possession of our university.

現(xiàn)在那些樓房歸我們大學(xué)所有。

從上例可見，第二和第三個(gè)例句意義相同，但表達(dá)方式不一樣。另一個(gè)近似的片語是come into one’s possession，其義為“落入某人之手”，如：

That famous painting has come into his possession.

那幅名畫已落入他的手。

在英語里，類似區(qū)別的片語尚有 in charge of和 in the charge of;前者表示“管理…”，后者表示“在…管理之下”。例：

The supervisor is in charge of the whole team.
