表示“收養”、“采用”、“采納”等，通常只用作及物動詞，用法上注意以下幾點：

1. 表示“收養”，主要指法律上的收養某人 (即作為兒女或繼承人)：

They are not my parents. I’m adopted. 他們不是我的親生父母，我是被收養的。

As they had no children of their own, they adopted an orphan. 他們自己沒有孩子，所以領養了一個孤兒。

若不是指法律上的正式收養，而只是單純地指“認養”，通常用動詞 foster：

He fostered two orphans. 他認養了兩個孤兒。

漢語中的“養子(女)”說成英語是 adopted son (daughter)，但“養父母”卻是 adoptive parents (adoptive father / adoptive mother)。值得一提的是，若用 foster (adj.) 則沒有此區別：

a foster child 養子

a foster father 養父

2. 表示“采用”、“采納”：

Our school has adopted a new teaching method. 我們學校采用了新的教學方法。

They’ll adopt our suggestion. 他們將采納我們的建議。
